Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh, one of the most talented and known artists today, was not recognised during his lifetime . He struggled with poverty and is said to have sold only one painting during his lifetime.
Van Gogh lived in financial hardship throughout his life. Despite his prolific output, he struggled to support himself. His brother, Theo, was kind enough to offer his unconditional financial support. Van Gogh faced severe mental health issues, including depression. He spent time in mental health institutions. It meant isolation and struggle.
While van Gogh’s work is now celebrated and considered groundbreaking, he didn’t live to see the impact of his art on the art world. His revolutionary approach to color, brushwork, and emotional depth were not fully appreciated until after his death. His search for a sense of belonging and understanding was often thwarted by his circumstances and people around him had not always been understanding of him.
Here at Gallery M Square, we think that this should not happen with any artist in the time of technology and connectedness. A gallery can help artists in numerous ways. Galleries give an artist exposure and showcase his/her work to the general public, collectors and media. Openings, exhibitions and online galleries make the work of artists visible and available to all. A good gallery takes up a role of mentor to guide the artist for his professional development. Artists can always seek feedback from peers and friends but galleries being in touch with the market forces can help the artist with critical inputs that can help the artist’s career immensely. We, at Gallery M Square are committed to help our artists and grow as a community.
