Kailas Hyalij
Everything comes from nature and everything goes back to it. Abstraction in Kailas Hyalij’s art certainly hints at ethereal landscapes, seascapes and nightscapes, and may take inspiration from nature but they are also abstract forms to behold. Human eye is trained to make sense of abstraction to see familiar forms and objects. His paintings thrive on the threshold of almost visible familiar objects and abstraction of wonderful color mixes emerging from parallel lines. The artist looks most interested in horizontal line patterns but uses a vertical portrait format rather than landscape format. He defies the frame of landscape painting.
Mr. Hyalij is a colorist. His colors may be mixed on the palette, but they are also mixed on a painting surface with the pull of squeegee which creates the melody of colors and patterns we see in his artwork. This is a legacy of many years of silkscreen printing he has done in the past. He also uses brushes and palette knives as well as other tools till he gets the desired outcome. Hence making art for him is a push and pull between control and letting go. For us it is a mystical play of one color showing through other and forms popping through the layers below. His small jewel-like paintings need you to come closer and observe them. Up close you might find the grey skies closing on a lighted city. There may be green shrubbery of exaggerated color against the afternoon sky. You may come across silvery waves in the blue ocean or sandy orange land merging in the rusty red sky that can only exist on Mars. But it is the game you decided to play. They are just untitled, one of a kind paintings that really need no introduction and no description.
For those who think that art needs inspiration, it must be stated that Mr. Hyalij is present in his studio from morning to evening like clockwork , only to take a break for lunch everyday. His talent is matched with his hard work and humility with which he approaches his work. It is no accident that the magical artwork emerges out of his studio.
Hyalij is an innovative painter who is not afraid of taking risks. He can leave behind a successful series of abstracted landscape paintings that won many awards and move on to create something totally different. Thus time and again, he has avoided the trap of dreariness by reinventing himself.
